DeeDee got her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Fine Arts from
the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. She continued her ceramics
education with Seth Cardew at the Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall,
England in 1989. She has studied drawing and painting with
Joe Mugnani at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Sumi
brush painting for seven years under Kazuko Reynolds.
She has been an Art Instructor at Miramar City College since
1993 and has taught at the UCSD Crafts Center since 1994. She
has been a self-employed ceramic sculptor since 1979 and was the
founding President of the San Diego Sculptors’ Guild.
DeeDee says that she has been an artist all her life.
While going to art school in Los Angeles, California, she found that
she could best make her art ideas with clay. After getting her
Masters, she came back home to San Diego and has been making clay
sculpture and pottery since.
DeeDee teaches art at the college level, which gives her a chance
to teach people how an artist sees things, and why an artist makes
art.
She also studies the martial arts of Aikido and Iaido, which
helps her develop the discipline it takes to be an artist.
As DeeDee says, “I have spent many years training and developing
my art skills. I have been fortunate to have had many great
teachers who encouraged and directed me.”
