Merle began working in clay in 1972 in Dallas, Texas. She received her training from both college, and workshops. Her work, over the years, has been an ongoing exploration of design, function, and style. From 1976 – 1984 she owned and operated M&R Mudworks creating production ware for sale at craft fairs and wholesale markets. Merle now creates wheel thrown and hand built pottery in San Diego, California.
Through the use of handmade stamps, added decorations, tactile texture and designs, she creates a canvas adding rich colors and earth tones to every piece. “Each piece comes alive as I design and create it, usually without any preplanning. Generally, one idea leads to another as each subsequent piece is based on ideas and enhancements from the previous one.” Most of her pottery is functional, made from stoneware or porcelain clay with food safe glazes. Merle’s pieces are intended for everyday use and can be used in the oven and microwave with care.
“I aspire to make pieces which are well crafted, aesthetically pleasing, and enjoyable to use.”
