Christine Soliz studied ceramics at Mesa College taking courses
from Dr. John Conrad and Lana Wilson. She took four semesters of Lana Wilson’s
Honors Ceramics.
Christine’s interest in strong
forms and a wide color range have led to the use of low fire clays and glazes.
By assembling combinations of handbuilt and thrown forms, she finds that
she can create pieces with a wide variety of shapes. The piece becomes the
result of many spontaneous decisions during its evolution. Experiments with
various glazing techniques and glaze combinations, along with single and
multiple firing processes, present new choices for the finished piece.
While Christine’s pieces might appear
to be similar, no two are ever alike. In addition to the forms and glazes,
craftsmanship is very important and she takes a great deal of pride in the
finished quality of her work.
Christine’s pieces are handbuilt and thrown assemblies of white earthenware
clay. Glazes are applied by using both brush and spray techniques. The pieces
are oxidation fired to Cone 06 in an electric kiln.
