Ed Thompson discovered ceramics in high school, when the crafts
class teacher pointed out a potter’s wheel sitting in the corner of the classroom.
Intrigued, Ed decided to give it a try. That was 30 years ago and
he has been playing with clay ever since.
After high school, Ed took classes at
the UCSD Crafts Center and Mesa College, but he really learned his craft
doing piecework for various production potteries around town. In the mid
1980’s he returned to the Crafts Center as an instructor and he taught ceramics
classes there off and on for years. He is a long-time member of the San Diego
Potters’ Guild and Allied Craftsmen of San Diego.
At present, Ed is probably best known
for his meticulously carved stoneware and porcelain and his thrown and altered
pieces. He has also played around with smoke fired burnished ware and a little
bit of wood firing (when he was living in Oregon).
After 30 years involvement in ceramics,
Ed is still exploring the materials and finding new ways to work with clay.
More of his work can be seen at the Potters’ Guild and at various galleries
around town.
