Originally from South Carolina, Katie Francis discovered her love for clay in college while pursuing a mathematics degree at Clemson University. After completing her program, she decided to pursue ceramics full time and has never looked back. She received her M.F.A. in ceramics at San Diego State University, and she is currently an adjunct professor teaching ceramic classes at several colleges in San Diego County.
Her work reflects on the delicate balance between control and surrender – a dialogue between the human hand and the unpredictable nature of ceramics. Her work is primarily soda-fired: a form of atmospheric firing where soda ash is introduced into the kiln, allowing the flames to carry the sodium vapors and leave unpredictable surfaces that evoke the untamed forces of nature. By recording the history of the firing permanently on the vessel, the results become truly one-of-a-kind. This process is central to her practice, capturing the balances between intention and spontaneity, permanence and ephemerality. Each piece carries traces of her identity, process, and sentiment, yet invites others to discover meaning and joy in the act of use, transforming ordinary moments into explorations of connection and reflection. |
