A hundred years ago, in honor of the completion of the Panama Canal, the city of San Diego hosted the Panama-California exposition for a two year celebration that left behind beautiful architecture and landscaping, now known as Balboa Park. The San Diego Potter's Guild is participating in the centennial celebration with the creation of stacking coil-built clay pots ("ollas") topped with a clay steamship, similar to the ships that crossed the Panama canal for the first time. The ollas are decorated with imagery, text, and symbols from 1915 to the present. The project is now complete ! It is on display in front of the Guild for everyone to enjoy for the remainder of the Balboa Park centennial celebration. You can read about the San Diego Potters' Guild tribute for the Balboa Park Centennial on the Friends of Balboa Park website. Below is a slideshow of our members working on the sculpture. |
