Julie first fell in love with ceramics in a summer school class just before high school and has been playing in clay ever since. After college (BA, Art, San Diego State University) and graduate school (MA, Art, University of Northern Iowa) she tried to be more practical and work in graphic design. But when she discovered she could make a living with clay there was no turning back.
For many years Julie worked in colorful, detailed inlaid colored porcelain, shipping to galleries all over the country. In 2000 she shifted her emphasis, no longer marketing her work through wholesale markets, abandoning all the travel and concentrating on the San Diego market. She now works in high fire stoneware and porcelain. Her work is notable for rich colorful glazes and is designed for function as well as decoration. Her ongoing fascination of work with clay is that new forms emerge and continue to evolve. Flat forms that can take a painterly design continue to be a favorite. Julie and a group of her friends—Five Potters—hold two sales each year, one in July, and one in December with the San Diego Pottery Tour. Julie has taught at Grossmont College and Southwestern College and participated in the Chinese Ceramic Exchange, demonstrating her porcelain techniques to student potters in China. She is also a member of Allied Craftsmen of San Diego. |
