Sarah Parent
Exploring the possibilities of pottery has captivated me since the first class. I became a ceramics major at the University of Washington, and now that I’ve been making for 15 years, my fascination is greater than ever.
Pottery has so much potential. First, I throw and manipulate on the wheel then add hand-built elements so each piece is totally unique. Choosing the metamorphosis that occurs with a crystalline glaze adds its own unexpected and striking finish. Crystalline glazes are formed when zinc and silica combine at high temperatures and start to form crystals in the matrix of the glaze. Called Willemite in nature, the crystal growing process is sped up in the kiln. I continually probe for new and more refined ways to capture this fluidity of clay, glaze, chemistry and fire. My greatest goal is that someone forms a connection with one of my pieces and wants to utilize it daily because it has character and is unique, something that is hard to find in this day and age of mass production. Pieces are food, dishwasher and microwave safe. |
