Patti Rague grew up in Los Angeles and settled in San Diego in 1979. After graduating from San Diego State University with a BA in Fine Art, she continued on through graduate school with a focus on ceramic sculpture and an emphasis in Raku glaze and firing. A semester studying in Japan was a life changing event that has continued to play an integral role in all aspects of creativity, design, proportion, scale and color.
After three decades of designing professional medical and dental facilities in the Southern California region, the business of RAGUEstudio has changed course and Patti has returned to a focus on creating individual art. Clay remains her main draw as the tactile experience of the material provides an unending opportunity for sculptural forms and surface treatments allow a painterly direction as an additional expression. ARTIST STATEMENT The tactile quality of clay and the forms created by handbuilding figures create a surface which becomes a 3D canvas. Inspiration from textures and colors found In nature, everyday structures and industrial items are built up upon layers of clay, natural oxides and underglazes. The whimsical nature can be brought out in an object that has a functional property but in a certain light it takes on a personality all of its own. Celebrations, holidays and cultural dogma are part of every society and finding the whimsical link that ties us all together is often a key in the figurative work. |
