Shirley Jew started in clay as an outlet and to relax after teaching all day, plus to get units to advance in her career. San Diego State University had summer courses in ceramics and she took the first course and was determined to learn to center the clay. That led to another course during the Fall. Eight years later there were no more classes to take and the most logical path was to get a Masters in ceramics. Her teacher Martha Longnecker wanted that to happen; Shirley did not take that path.
Now she is retired and works at the Potters' Guild studio in Balboa Park every chance she gets but travel, family obligations, household chores and gardening seem to get in the way. Functional pottery with brushwork, especially cookware, is her chosen way to express herself. She sells at the Potters' Guild, to friends and does special orders, especially dinnerware sets. Clay is important to Shirley, as it is a very fluid, malleable medium with an endless amount of forms and shapes. |
