Victor developed a love for working in clay early in life. While in high school he had the privilege of working with several professional potters, artists and craftsmen in a large cooperative studio in Colorado in the late 1960’s. After 10 years as a full time production potter making functional stoneware, he decided to quit pottery altogether. In a complete departure from clay, glazes, and kilns, he moved to San Diego and with a friend, developed a successful business designing and manufacturing automated welding systems. Thirty-five years later after selling this business Victor has gone back to his roots. His pottery studio is located in southeastern San Diego County near Jamul where he also grows Syrah grapes and makes wine.
Victor now works primarily in porcelain, making functional pieces; special order dinnerware, mugs, beer growlers and vessel sinks. More recently he has been experimenting with one of a kind, “organic” pieces; lidded jars and vases in the Japanese tradition of “beauty in imperfection.” I love working in clay and all the unexpected surprises (good and bad) which happen all on their own. Working fast, experimenting, breaking the rules and producing lots of variety keeps pottery-making exciting. Now that I am retired, I have diverse activities in my life. I spend my time making pottery, taking care of our property and doing what I love most — helping people at the very bottom in Mexico. For 20 years once or twice a week I cross into Tijuana to work with a Christian ministry called “La Esperanza” which consists of drug rehabilitation centers in several cities throughout Mexico.
